I'm a psychology major pursuing a masters degree. However, I plan going for the doctor of psychology. If you expect to make a decent living in psychology, you need to get a doctoral degree. Then again, those that choose psychology as their field of choice do so because it is a calling to serve God.

Two questions you should answer yourself are:
1. What personal gains or accomplishments would be found that would impact you personally?
2. How working in the field of psychology would impact the Kingdom of God?

Go to your Bible. The Holy Bible is a great source for mental health issues.

Marriage counseling can be lucrative if you can build up a client base and get good referrals you can charge a good hourly rate but it takes a while to get established...

No, you definately do not need any science at all to be a psychologist (except psychology courses of course). You take and undergraduate degree, masters and ph.d in psychology (such as counselling psychology). You will have to write a thesis (this includes doing research and trying to prove a theory). Anyone who has a Ph.D. (even in philosophy) can call themselves Dr. so and so, but you're not an actual medical doctor. Psychiatrists are different... they take mostly sciences and go to medical school. Also, psychologists focus mainly on counselling while psychiatrists highly focus on using pharmacological treatment (drugs). As a psychologist you generally cannot prescribe medication. Also, some psychologists only teach, only do research, or a combination.

You do not have to go to medical school to be a psychologist.
However, you can't do much with a bachelor degree in psychology. You'll need to get a Masters. Then you can teach psychology at the college level. You can be a psychologist in private practice. You can be a school psychologist working with the special education students.

Many psychologists doing in clinical work have an MS degree or PhD or an DSW ((Doctorate on social work) Ifhe has a OPhd or DSW, he certainly ius a doctor, although he is not a medical doctor.

My son in law's father spent a career in the Air Force as a psychologist. He has a master's degree in science in Psychology.

Psychologists can do a lot of the counseling that mght be done by a psychiatrist. They , however, cannot presacribe drugs. That must be done by a doctor ( MD-type doctor, that is)

Psychology is one of the most popular majors in spite of the fact there are essentially no jobs for a person with a bachelor's degree in Psychology.

You can only realistically expect to make a living in this field if you get a PhD so you can set yourself up in private practice as a Psychologist. To do this you have to graduate from your bachelors program with a GPA of at least 3.0. If you think you can do this and commit yourself to at least 4 years of additional schooling after you get your bachelors, then great.

But if you do not think you will get at least a 3.0 or do not intend to stay in school past your bachelors degree then you should consider a different field.

And since you need a PhD and once you have a PhD no one really cares where you got your bachelors, just go to the place you can go for the cheapest, generally your closest state university, as an in state student.

If you do not want to pursue a masters in Psychology, you can also go into a masters program in a lot of other areas or to law school as well.

People with only an undergrad degree in psychology made a starting salary of $36,000 per year on average in 2009 according to:

Your best bet to start down a path in MIS is to do a useful internship while still in school. With or without a internship the next step would be to utilize the on campus recruiting office. If that route is not available to you / is not working than you need to directly contact larger corporations that routinely hire large numbers of MIS grads into structured training programs.
You have to look in the right kind of place and understand that a fresh out of school person such as yourself does not have the experience to be useful as Project Manager or Business Systems Analyst. Both roles require someone that has been through a number of situations that simply cannot be part of school.
Take a look at the profiles linked to on the site below.

Yes, there are ENLISTED and OFFICER careers.

Enlisted career field code is called 4C0X1. The coarse is about 7 weeks long up at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, Texas.

was actually going to join that career field, but ended up not doing so. Mostly you make appointments and schedule patients, all patient handling is done by the dr's. you will monitor patients that are put on wards for suicide and things of that nature.

Generally, I believe it'll just make it easier to get any nonspecific job, unless you go into academia; then, it's a matter of getting tenure, a publishing deal, or a talkshow. It might be fruitful to consider a life without a career, working lower-end jobs that allow you the freedom and time to do what you want.

To be a psychologist and make good money, you would need at least a master's degree and you would do better with a Ph.D.

That would mean 5-8 years of college.

You might want to look at a career in social work. It could be faster.

There are other related careers which take less college.-- substance abuse counseling, school counseling, career counseling

But to get a good job in the area, we are talking about a master's degree. Not bad since you can probably work while finishing.

More good education is at

Both are good fields. How about splitting the difference and becoming a school psychologist??? We need them!!!

You should decide soon, since the training and education are quite different. To do therapy, you will need at least a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Social Work, Professional Counseling, Substance Abuse; or a PhD/PsyD/EdD in Clinical or Educational Counseling.

Teaching starts with a BA in teaching, and takes a different tack from there.

Something else to think about. If you are reacting emotionally to the idea of counseling/therapy as a career, maybe there are issues that you need to work through first. Even if you don't have issues, I would suggest going into therapy yourself. You will (1) deal with any issues that you never realized were issues, and (2) begin to understand how the process works.

Undergraduate training can be similar for any of these fields (the one exception I can think of is for Clinical Social work; I would highly recommend that you go through a BSW program if you choose that field).

BTW, if you are interested in school psychology, check out their website...I'll list it below. Or...if you are completely confused, write to me. My screen name (wiscman77) is at Yahoo.com

My friend went directly to DC to work for a Congressman. The pay wasn't great, but he got a lot of experience in the field. He went on to get a Master in Public Policy and is now a city administrator.

There are a large number of openings with your present degree and to gather experience before a Master's degree as well.

If you get a Masters or a PhD, you'll have more (well-paying) opportunities such as being a university prof, psychologist/psychiatrist, or researcher of some sort.

With just a four-year Bachelor's, you can get entry-level corporate positions (I know business majors would scoff at this, but my friend's sister managed to do this), management, and sales.

Just make sure to network and meet as much people as you can (:

People hire from within. Such as they hire hourly employees as an entry level salary employee. Otherwise, they hire people who someone knows.

They might not advertise they are hiring, just on their website or something so most of the applicants end up being someone somebody knows.

This is why in college they always say education isn't enough, you have to learn how to network. Or as it's better said, "It's not what you know, it's who you know!"

This is a serious answer.

Go on for your Ph.D. or Psy.D. and practice psychology in the Beverly Hills area. If you get one person from the film industry as a client and do a superb job helping this client, word-of-mouth referrals could build a very interesting and lucrative practice.

In any event, although there is probably a surplus of therapists in the area, the hourly rates are high and the population transient enough (meaning new residents needing a therapist) that you can probably build a practice in any event.

I'm sure you already know that you need a doctorate for almost any worthwhile and well-paying career in psychology.

Best wishes.

My best friend is very successful in the same field and has a full wrist bracelet tattoo alone with six large kanji symbols on the inside of her wrist.

If you are qualified for the position, you will be fine. Either they won't care at all about it, or you will have to cover it with a bracelet or long sleeves. You're definitely not screwed because of it especially if you're willing to cover it.
