This week is National Police Week, a time when we honor the men and women who work to keep our streets safe. But did you know just how many different kinds of police officers there are? From state troopers who guard the highways to detectives who investigate crimes, there are a wide variety of law enforcement positions out there for anyone who’s interested in a criminal justice career. They include:
Patrol Officers
Patrol officers are the law enforcement officials who serve on the front lines. They patrol neighborhoods either on foot or in a vehicle to watch for crime, enforce laws and ordinances, respond to complaints, and arrest suspects if necessary.
Sheriffs and Deputy Sheriffs
These law enforcement professionals work at the county level, are elected to office, and usually work in a smaller department than urban police officers.
State Troopers
State troopers aren’t bound to a particular city or county. Instead, they are responsible for surveillance at the state level, particularly on highways and along borders.
Detectives
Detectives, who often are also referred to as special agents, are the ones who investigate crime scenes, collect evidence, and interview witnesses.
Federal Agents
Federal law enforcement agents work in for a national government organization, such as the FBI or the DEA. They have jurisdiction to investigate and pursue criminals on a national level.
